Mastering the Chaos: Navigating Crisis Committees in a MUN

Crisis committees are fast paced committees in a MUN, dedicated to resolving new and pressing issues introduced during the committee proceedings. Delegates of such a committee have to be quick in responding to the crisis, forming strategies and alliances on the spot to tackle the arising issue. Typically, the one crisis ends with the formation of a resolution, shortly before a new crisis takes its place. However, there are times when the crisis remains unresolved.

Crisis committees usually involve developments in an ongoing conflict, which the delegates have to comprehend and address in search of a solution. Some useful tips in such situations include:

• Taking roles - Delegates take on roles such as Diplomats, Military leaders, Journalists etc. in order to aid their proposition.
• Writing directives - Directives are written requests or permits that delegates can introduce in committee via the Executive Board, which make real-time changes to the crisis scenario. These directives after the discretion of the Board are then circulated around the committee to address the crisis problem.
• Being flexible/adaptable - Directives proposed or actions of various delegates during the ongoing crisis can also affect your argument. Any changes in the situation have to be carefully noted and speeches have to be altered to fit into or oppose the stance proposed by delegates who have spoken prior to you.

Crisis committees can be challenging especially for new delegates however, concrete preceding research is instrumental in confidently combatting the situation.
