Navigating MUN committees can be daunting, but effective communication is key. Tips include raising points, passing chits, and speaking confidently.

Navigating through MUN committees can be daunting especially for first time delegates. However, communication is the key to success. Knowing the appropriate ways to communicate can grab the attention of your fellow delegates, making you stand out in a committee and open doors for you on your quest to win best delegate and other titles.

Here are some helpful tips to communicate effectively in a MUN:

Points that can be raised in a MUN:

  1. Point of Order -Correct a procedural error. A point of order is useful in situations wherein the delegate can point out any mistakes made during committee proceedings.
  2. Point of Inquiry - Ask the EB for clarification regarding a parliamentary procedure A point of enquiry can be raised by a delegate in case they want to confirm a fact with the chairs.
  3. Point of Personal Privilege - Express a personal concern. A point of personal privilege can be raised by a delegate when they are uncomfortable about their surroundings. For example, if the room is too warm or they are not able to hear the speakers.
  4. Point of Information - Ask a question to clarify doubts during speech. Delegates can raise a Point of Information when they want to clarify any questions that may arise in their minds during a speech. This is not always permitted and can be used only during the speakers list.

Passing chits in committee:

Chits passing is an effective way to communicate with fellow delegates or the EB during a moderated caucus.

While writing chits, it is important to clearly state your delegation and your stance on a resolution.

Formal language should be used which is legible for the viewer to read.

They can be concise or elaborated based on the preference of the EB.

Passing notes to other delegates can be a useful way of forming alliances and resolutions. This can be either via EB or directly to the other delegate.

All notes have to be handed over to the logistics members present in each committee to be transferred. Do refrain from passing chits yourself.

Overall, the core of a successful MUN experience is confidence while speaking and debating. Remember the end goal is not to win titles but to give it your best shot.

We hope this helps and we cannot wait to interact with you at DBIS MUN 2024.
