Correct preparation, engagement, and reflection are important for any Model UN delegate, especially if it’s your first time, and is key to achieving your potential at future MUNs. To ensure your optimum performance at each stage of the conference, follow these tips:
Before the conference
- Research your country and topic thoroughly and read relevant United Nations reports, speeches, and resolutions from your country's representatives. Familiarise yourself with your country's position and history on the issues.
- Draft a position paper outlining your country's stance using credible sources. Have it proofread by your faculty advisor and use it as a reference during committee sessions, to improve your stance on the agenda and better your GSL and SSL speeches.
- Practice public speaking and impromptu debates with classmates. Work on your opening and closing speeches and practice problem-solving and negotiating positions.
- Ensure you are aware of the rules governing a MUN, and have a good understanding of terms such as un/moderated caucuses, yielding one’s time to the chair, etc.
During the conference
- Establish connections with your fellow delegates during unmoderated caucuses to form alliances and build an understanding of their country’s situation. You may also meet delegates whose ideas align with yours and you can discuss possible solutions to the issues discussed.
- When asked a difficult question, maintain a calm demeanour. Be confident, maintain your composure, and do not back down.
- During debates, address all the arguments to the chair. Think positively and state your facts firmly.
After the conference
- Talk to your faculty advisor to get feedback on your performance and areas for improvement. Reflect on your own performance honestly.
- Reach out to delegates you collaborated with to maintain connections for future conferences. Exchange contact details.
- Revise your position paper based on what you learned at the conference.
In the end, we are gathered to have a great time discussing and debating. Keep calm and stay focused. All the best!
